Since launching in 1997, Invisalign has transformed the field of orthodontics for the better by offering patients an alternative to traditional metal braces. Today, they have helped millions of patients all over the world achieve the straight, healthy smiles they’ve always wanted. While this orthodontic treatment is unique and beneficial in many ways, you still need to wear a retainer afterward just like you would with traditional orthodontics. But for how long? Read on to learn why wearing a retainer is important and how long you’ll need to do so.
How Long Do You Have to Wear Your Retainer?
Immediately following the conclusion of your Invisalign treatment, you will be instructed to start wearing a retainer. Initially, you will need to do so for 12 to 22 hours each day for approximately six months. From there, your orthodontist may tell you to transition to wearing it only at night. Once you’ve been wearing your retainer for around 12 months, you will start wearing them for only three to five nights per week. So, even though you’ll need to continue wearing them throughout your life, you won’t have to do so constantly.
What If You Don’t Wear Your Retainer?
As you work your way through your sets of Invisalign trays, your aligners will gently move your teeth into a better position to make them both look and function better. It will take some time for your teeth to settle. For this reason, it’s recommended that you wear your retainer more often in the months immediately following your treatment. If you don’t, your teeth will begin to move back to their original positions.
How to Protect Your Invisalign Retainer from Damage
Since not wearing your retainer can result in issues with your new smile, you’ll want to be very diligent about caring for it. The last thing you want to do is to accidentally misplace or damage your retainer. This means you’ll need to have it replaced, which allows your teeth time to move back into their original positions.
Fortunately, this can be prevented as long as you follow the best practices associated with retainer care. For example, make sure to remove them when you consume anything other than water. Additionally, clean your retainers at least once per day to prevent staining and bacteria buildup. You should also store them in a sturdy carrying case so they’re less likely to break, be lost, or get thrown in the trash.
Having to wear a retainer after completing Invisalign treatment can seem like a bit of a nuisance, but it’s worth it to maintain your results. By keeping up with your retainer wear time and maintenance, you can keep your smile looking straight, healthy, and worthy of praise for years to come!
